Nokia kontserdimajas galaõhtul “Spordiaasta tähed 2013” kuulutati täna õhtul aasta sportlaseks Nikolai Novosjolov, treeneriks Henn Põlluste ja aasta võistkonnaks Eesti epeenaiskond, kuhu kuulub ka haapsallanna Kristina Kuusk.
“See on väga suur au saada auhinda ja et sellised inimesed seda auhinda üle annavad,” ütles Haapsalust pärit vehkleja Nikolai Novosjolov aasta parimaks sportlase auhinda korvpallur Tiit Sokult vastu võttes.
“Et olla edukas, on vaja kindlasti õnne. Minu triumfis on õnnel olnud väga suur roll. Kuid ainult õnnest ei piisa, selleks tuleb teha rasket, süstemaatilist tööd,” lisas Novosjolov.
“See on uskumatu, meil on nii palju häid treenereid, ma tänan, et te valisite mind,” ütles Virtsust pärit maadlustreener Põlluste auhinda vastu võttes. Heiki Nabit treeniv Põlluste valiti aasta treeneriks ka 2012. aastal.
Parima naissportlase kandidaatide hulgas oli ka tennisist Kaia Kanepi, kuid jäi hääletusel alla vehkleja Julia Beljajevale.
Vehklejate triumf spordigalal jätkus, kui hõigati välja aasta spordisündmus. Selleks hääletasid spordisõbrad Eesti vehklejate kuldse pooltunni ehk Nikolai Novosjolovi ja Julia Beljajeva kuldmedalid maailmameistrivõistlustel 8. augustil Budapestis.
“See oli meie jaoks uskumatu moment,” ütles Novosjolov ja andis sarnaselt epeenaiskonnaga auhinna üle Eesti vehklemisliidule.
Spordiaasta edukamad selgitati välja rahvahääletuse, spordiajakirjanike ning spordialaliitude häälte põhjal.
Eestis on aasta sportlasi valitud juba 80 aastat, esimeseks aasta sportlaseks valiti 1933. aastal kaugushüppaja Nikolai Küttis.
Alates 1955. aastast on parimate valimine olnud järjepidev traditsioon, mida on aja jooksul täiustatud: 1967. aastast valitakse eraldi aasta mees- ja naissportlast, 1969. aastal lisandus aasta võiskond ning 1988. aastal treener.
