Maiste teadis, et saates on osaleda lubanud ajaloolased Lauri Vahtre ja raamatu üks autoreid Juhan Kreem.
Küsimusele, kumma seisukohti ta ise rohkem pooldab, vastas Maiste, et jääb nende keskele.
“Eesti ajaloo” II osa, kus muistse vabadusvõitluse asemel räägitakse ristisõdadest, on tekitanud palju vastukaja. “Kõige rohkem ärritab, et kriitikat on tehtud raamatut ennast lugemata,” ütles Maiste.
Tema hinnangul on näiteks eluolu kirjeldavad peatükid raamatus väga head, sest sellest on varem vähe räägitud.
Ajalooõpetajat häirib aga, et osa peatükke on kirjutatud raskepäraselt, nagu poleks need algselt eesti keeles kirjutatud.
